Do the Afghan people desire the Afghanistan we hope to help create? No, they do not. If they did, they’d be side by side with our soldiers, creating it. What they desire is our absence. Too many Afghans see us as the latest in a long line of occupiers. We aren’t… but that doesn’t matter. We don’t control the message. For 10 years we’ve let young Afghans be brought up hearing the wrong message about us. That failure has cost us any hope of “victory.”
