Compassion for Pakistan

Amna Buttar is a human rights activist who left her career as a doctor
in the United States to work with Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan. Until
recently, she was a member of parliament. She is on Twitter.

OCTOBER 15, 2012

We need to change the lens through which we view Pakistan from one of
conflict to one of compassion.

Growing up in Pakistan, I never imagined, even in my wildest dreams,
that there would be a time when girls would get shot for going to
school. Welcome to the Pakistan that has been hijacked by organized
criminals, the Taliban. They call themselves promoters of Islam. But
they know nothing about Islam. If they were really familiar with this
belief system, they would remember that the first word of revelation in
the Quran is “Iqra” (read), and would therefore refrain from bombing
girls’ schools.

The women and children of Pakistan don’t need special envoys, drones,
or even foreign aid. They need our sympathy and attention.
Pakistanis are exhausted with the barbarism in one form or other that
continues to escalate in every passing moment. Youth like Mallala are
getting globally isolated every day. Their dreams and actions
contribute to a pressure cooker of hope, but they have nowhere to go.

We need to keep our attention fixed on the women and children of
Pakistan. They don’t need special envoys, drones, or even foreign aid.
What they need is for ordinary citizens of the world to see them
through a new lens. What Pakistanis need is compassion. Ordinary
citizens of the world have to make Malala and others feel their
sympathy for them.

They can do this through reaching out via social media to keep the
conversation going, which will help keep girls like Malala on the map,
and revered and honored by the Pakistani government and civil society.
Positive messages of hope and love really do help. This kind of
support, constantly streaming through the social media world, should
ideally be an ongoing effort and not stop with the news cycle.

Once Pakistan feels the world’s support and sympathy, Malala and her
peers could become even more emboldened to exert themselves and push
for reform, instead of spending their time dodging the bullets of angry
men.

U.S. Said to Be Preparing Potential Targets Tied to Libya Attack

WASHINGTON — The American military’s top-secret Joint Special Operations Command is preparing detailed information that could be used to kill or capture some of the militants suspected in the attack last month in Libya that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, senior military and counterterrorism officials said on Tuesday.

Preparing the “target packages” is the first step in a process that the Pentagon and Central Intelligence Agency are taking in preparation for, and in advance of, any orders from President Obama and his top civilian and military advisers to carry out action against those determined complicit in the attack on the United States Mission in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.

Mr. Obama, whose administration has faced criticism from both Republicans and Democrats over a possible intelligence failure before the Benghazi attack, has vowed that he would bring the killers of Mr. Stevens and the three other Americans to justice, but he and his top advisers have not indicated how that might happen.

Mr. Obama has a range of options available — including drone strikes, Special Operations raids like the one that killed Osama bin Laden; and joint missions with the Libyan authorities — but all carry substantial political, diplomatic and physical risks. Administration officials say no decisions have been made on any potential targets.

The Joint Special Operations Command, which includes the Navy SEAL team that killed Bin Laden, works continuously with the C.I.A. to update several lists of potential terrorist targets around the world.

Since the attack on the diplomatic mission and a nearby annex in Benghazi on the night of Sept. 11, American officials say that Special Operations planners have sharply increased their efforts to track the location and gather information on several members of Ansar al-Shariah as well as other militants with ties to Al Qaeda’s arm in North Africa — Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb — that American officials believe were involved in planning and carrying out the attack there.

It remained unclear precisely how many of the “target packages” are being prepared — perhaps a dozen or more — but military and counterterrorism officials said that the Libyan authorities had identified several suspected assailants based on witness accounts, video and other photographs from the scene.

Mr. Obama took on a number of issues at play between America and the Muslim world, vowing that the “United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon” and warning that time to diplomatically resolve the Iranian nuclear issue “is not unlimited.”

But he refused to go further than what he has said in the past, that “a nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained,”

Mohammed Morsi, Egypt’s president, has told an Arab League conference that “change” of government is needed in violence-wracked Syria and that time should not be wasted “speaking of reform”.

“This time has passed now. Now it is time for change,” Morsi, who was making his first presidential address to the league, said on Wednesday in the capital Cairo.

He said that a quartet of regional states – Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey and Egypt – would meet to discuss the Syrian crisis, which started 17 months ago as an insurrection, but has turned into a civil war with opposition fighters battling to dislodge Bashar al-Assad from power.
